desmond from south africa on corporations

My name is Desmond Desai. I'm from the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance in South Africa. We are concerned in South Africa that the major multinational corporations are continuously dumping their toxic chemicals with impunity on poor communities who are living on their fenceline. We are bearing the brunt of multinational corporations, who have their headquarters in New York, who are listed on the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, who are sending out huge profits to the Europeans and the Americans. While we here in South Durban are bearing the brunt of the toxic chemicals and are bearing the medical brunt. The result of it is that a lot of us in South Durban are suffering high levels of leukemia, asthma and cancer to the detriment of society. The State in South Africa is bearing the brunt of all the medical damage and destruction caused by the transnational corporations like Shell, BP, Anglo-American, Bayer and so on. We are hoping that the message out there is the transnational corporations must stop their double standards and regarding our lives as cheap. It's time that they started to bring the same international standards that they have in Europe to South Africa and operate under those strong conditions. We are also appealing to the EU and the Americans to start introducing corporate accountability legislation so that we can start holding these multinational corporations accountable for the destruction in South Africa and in Africa as a whole.
